New Avian Influenza Prevention Zones (AIPZ) Announced for England and Scotland
To combat the growing threat of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) and the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) have introduced new avian influenza prevention zones (AIPZ) across England and Scotland. These measures aim to protect the health and welfare of bird flocks amidst escalating disease cases.
Key Details:
-
Effective Date:
- From 12:00 on 25 January 2025, an AIPZ with enhanced biosecurity measures will apply to all of England and Scotland.
- From 00:01 on 27 January 2025, mandatory housing measures already in force in certain areas will be extended to new regions.
-
Regions Affected by Mandatory Housing Measures (From 27 January 2025):
- East Riding of Yorkshire
- City of Kingston upon Hull
- Lincolnshire
- Norfolk
- Suffolk
- New additions: Shropshire, York, and North Yorkshire
-
Biosecurity-Only Zones (From 25 January 2025):
- All other areas of England will need to implement enhanced biosecurity measures without mandatory bird housing.
These measures are crucial for protecting flocks of all sizes, whether they are commercial, pet birds, or backyard flocks.
What This Means for Bird Keepers
All bird keepers must:
-
Check the AIPZ Map: Use the interactive map to identify your area and understand your obligations.
-
Comply with Housing Rules: In affected regions, birds must be housed to minimize exposure to the virus.
-
Follow Biosecurity Measures: This includes disinfecting equipment, securing feed, and preventing wild bird contact with kept birds.
Why These Measures Are Important
The government has observed a significant rise in bird flu cases across the UK. The measures are part of a nationwide strategy to prevent further outbreaks, ensuring the safety of both poultry and public health.
The AIPZs will remain in effect until further notice and are subject to regular review as new data emerges.
